Be Prepared: Know What to Say and How to Say It

What you say and how you say it is critical to getting information out to your stakeholders, the news media and others. This intensive, full-day course is designed to give participants the confidence they need to explain their work and talk about tough issues.

Participants will learn:

  • How to prepare for news interviews or speaking engagements.
  • How to craft and deliver your organization’s messages.
  • How to communicate your messages effectively—even during a crisis.
  • What reporters and producers look for in a news source.
  • Your rights as a news subject.
  • How to respond to different reporter styles.
  • How to engage your audiences via social media channels.
  • How to take charge of your on-camera appearance.

This highly interactive course features customized scenarios relevant to each participant’s program, site or project and intensive one-on-one videotaped sessions with a professional interviewer and TV photojournalist. A group critique will follow the on-camera session. Videotaped real-life examples of what to say and what not to say during a news media interview or public speaking engagement also will be shown.

The course is limited to 15 participants. Participants will be contacted via email prior to the workshop and will receive a customized Spokesperson Training Manual and a DVD of on-camera interviews conducted during the session.
